In The Thick Of It

You’ve been growing it out for a while now and you’re somewhere between six and 12 months of hair growth. You’ve conquered early phase awkward stage, and maybe you’ve been experimenting with awkward stage hairstyles. Now, as our boy Andy coined it, you’re in “the thick of it.”

Congratulations are in order. Up to this point you’ve earned some stripes, bursting through the initial challenges presented by awkward stage hair.

You’re feeling like you have pretty long hair at this point, which you do when compared to where you were at four months of growth.

But let’s not kid ourselves. There’s still a ways to go before full flow is achieved.

If this is the longest your hair has even been in your life, by now you are asking yourself, “what the hell do I do with it?” Great question.

Easy Awkward Stage Hairstyles

With a willingness to try new things you will discover there are a lot of options for styling your awkward stage hair in this phase.

Most of them are easy and make a huge difference in the way your hair looks—but most importantly how you feel about it.

  1. I am at the mostly shoulder length awkward shoulder length. My hair is slightly wavey. I often where a Half High Ball’ish style. I don’t put it in a ball but more of a pony tail to pull my hair out of my face. I LOVE your hair ties for when I pull the whole mess back. However, I find them kinda bulky when I am only doing a partial like the Half High Ball so I use a thin clear plastic tie that is difficult to remove and breaks my hair. This makes me sad : ( . Any chance you guys have considered making a smaller diameter/narrower tie using the same materials as your regular ties for this application??? PLEEEEESE?

  2. I have been growing my hair for 11 months, and it looks terrible because I am still in the akward stage, and I don’t have any facial hair and my hair is wavy, so I don’t know what to do.

in my school long hair is not allowed and they are telling me to cut it and I don’t want to because I put a lot of effort into growing it, so if you can help me with some advice it would be great.

  3. I’ve been growing my hair for a year. It’s straight and people have complemented me on it, but it flips up at the base of my neck making me look like I have a 60s style girl flip. What can I do about that?

    1. YO ED! Glad to have you here, and good question. This might just be part of the path but it shouldn’t last too long. Once your hair gets a little past your shoulders it should stop flipping up like that. If it’s really a problem in the meantime, you could straighten out the ends with a straightening iron (we need to do a video on that), or, and not making a hard sell but you could try The Longhairs Hair Serum. A little bit on the tips every day should dampen that girl-flip effect until it grows past your shoulders.

In any case, you’re almost there, keep lettin it ride man!

      1. Hey. I have the opposite problem – I like the ‘flip’ , yet it’s starting to get too long. How do I keep the ‘flip-up’ parts?

  4. I can confidently recommend this guide as a gorgeous man going through the awkward phase. Super useful. More than that, this website may just be the best thing on the internet. For how pure, unrefined, and mind-altering this quality content is – it should be illegal.

    Keep it long gentlemen!

  5. Ive been growing my hair out for the past 10 months. I have a receding thinning hair line but still want to grow it out, Any tips on how to rock long hair for older men in their 60s.

  6. I have wavy brown hair, so I can easily do all of these when my hair is wet, but either not as well, or just differently when it’s dry.

Some other styles I’ve tried: tying up just the back, tying up the back and the top separately, stretch comb headband, straight down fringe (emophase), side swept fringe across my entire forhead, side swept fringe with a part, middle part fringe, middle part with an inch of volume.

Endless possibilities of maneuvering different parts of my hair in different directions, messing up my hair to increase texture and volume, braids, side part with a few inches of volume, side part on the other side, and it tends to have less volume, tying the back in the front around my neck, trapping my hair in my retainers (not recommended to do often, especially roughly and when it’s just long enough to do as it can break the hair and stunt growth in the front, and I actually learned that the hard way after excessively biting the front for a few months after it just becoming biting length).

I haven’t tried it yet, but a straight up mohawk if I could get a super strong hold mohawk (like just the fanning up part because I’m not going to shave off my sides as it would take a year to grow back), flaring up the back if it’s short enough, maybe a pompadour, side part slight fringe, fringe with some volume, tucking in the back, partial slick back on the top, but pull the back forwards, loose hanging bangs that aren’t exactly combed straight down, teased hair, picked out hair.

My hair currently reaches the top of my chin in the front, and the back and side are also around 6in.

    1. Yo TWISTYPUZZLER! Quite a thoroughly diverse listing of awkward stage hairstyles! If you have pictures of these we would love your help in building this post out further. Let me know, and thanks for the great comment and KEEP LETTING IT RIDE!

    2. Hardest part for me is that I’m in the process of getting discharged from the reserves so I have to keep my sides cut (even during this pandemic) I do keep my top long and do a undercut style slicked back. Otherwise I’m usually wearing a top knot.

  7. Pretty cool — watched all the hairstyles to the very end! That’s saying something about your ‘copy’ 😉

Maybe in the future you can have two navigation arrows with a “not there yet?” or “is yours longer?” for those of us not quite at this stage or for the others who are past this stage– I decided to start growing my hair and purchased the hair ties– didn’t realize there were head wraps. 🙁 Good to know.

    1. Spoke too soon– I just now noticed the video at the top for those of us who have it shorter! Haha!

  8. Thank you El Moreno. These are all awesome ideas and hairstyles. I’m about 4 months away from this length and I can’t wait. What kind of sea salt spray is your favorite? Looking forward to the Hair Serum being restocked because I need to get some of that magical elixir. The Dude Abides!

    1. Author

Thanks Sean! Hope these are useful in a few months. We are working on releasing a sea salt spray so I’ve been strictly using out prototype formula. It will be released this year and let me tell ya, it is awesome! Serum should be back in stock soon. Have had some manufacturing delays do to COVID-19.

  9. Great posting. If you already have a video for the next stage up you should link to it somewhere for those of us on the next stage. Thanks.

  10. This is awesome. You guys have been a great motivation to growing my hair. I’ve always had it short cuz it’s extremely curly, and the awkward stages are, well, extremely awkward! Keep it up guys 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

  11. Awesome as usual. Just a quick translation from American English to Canadian English. …… beanie = toque ….. .

    1. a toque is in french canadian aka québequois; in france, we call it un bonnet
