The Great Cut: 2-Year Anniversary

Two Years Later

March 16, 2019, or 3/16/19 as we affectionately call it, is a day that will live forever in history. Here in 2021 it’s the 2-year anniversary of The Great Cut.

It’s hard to say much more than what’s already been written and recorded and edited; we broke the news with a world record announcement, the drama of the day was told in Recapping The Great Cut, and the raw energy was captured in A Hair-Whipping, Karate-Kicking, Record-Breaking Success.

If you’re like us you might even get a little choked up reliving all the magical content from The Great Cut.

For The Great Cut 2-year anniversary, however, we turn our attention from the past to the future. Last year at this time we launched these t-shirts as a statement of purpose, commitment and encouragement for The Great Cut 2024…

One year later we have sold over 300 men’s, women’s and children’s sizes—which presumably means there are more than 300 people already growing their hair for 2024.

We asked these folks to share a few words, along with a hair update picture wearing their t-shirts. Here are some of their responses.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

To be able to keep track of my hair growth over the years and help some kids at the same time.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

Yes my mom who won her battle with cancer and my uncle who lost his battle to cancer

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

So I can keep measuring my hair to donate in 2024.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

Just thought it was cool to have long hair.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

To join the movement and remind myself who I'm doing this for!

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

Yes. A friend's 6 year old daughter with a brain tumor.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

I'm planning to attend the great cut.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

I've always wanted long hair.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

Great idea to raise awareness.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

My wife and daughter are cancer survivors. I started donating my hair 20 years ago.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

I bought the shirt for two reasons, first is because I believe in what you guys are doing. I've been growing my hair out and donating it since 2006, and until finding your organization I was skeptical about where my donations were going. The second reason I got the shirt is for a way to measure my progress and to advocate for the great cut.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

I served in the Marines right after high school and for almost twenty years I kept my hair short. After a rather messy divorce, I decided to try growing my hair out since a close friend was doing it as well.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

So people can ask about Children With Hair Loss.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

Nope, heard about The Longhairs. Checked it out and liked what I saw.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

Seemed like a cool way to generate awareness and track growth.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

My cousin Tushar.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

Support and make visible the drive and measure hair.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

Family, friends, and co workers say i have great, beautiful hair, so I want to embrace and share the hair.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

Support the Growing to donate cause.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

I have a niece who is overcame cancer. She struggled for years fighting near fatal cancer. She suffered from hair loss. I always wished their was something I could do to help her feel like she was just a normal kid. It feels good to know that with the hair I donate could help a child in need feel special.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

Decided to buy the t-shirt because I am planning on donating hair again.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

I am growing my hair out because I like to help people and if I can help make one child happy by donating hair, it makes me happy too.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

Thought it would be nice, convenient way of tracking my growth and maybe show it off as well.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

I am just doing me and not worrying about the worlds opinion on that.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

To share my progress with my community.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

My mom has been donating her hair to CWHL since 2006. Every even year, she does a donation drive. For every $25 donated to CWHL, she’ll donate an inch of hair. If she reaches $500 donated, she shaves her head. I wanted to do the same and two years ago was my first year donating on team Inch by Inch.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

I want to donate in 2024 and track my growth!

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

Not specifically, just like the mission.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

I just thought it was a good way to keep me committed to growing my hair to donate and raise money.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

Thankfully, for me personally, I haven’t necessarily been affected by any youth who has a need for a wig. One of my dear friends has alopecia and it has motivated me to continue to grow my hair and donate it. I believe that since I am capable of growing my hair out, it’s my obligation to grow out and donate it, especially for the kids. No matter what the top of my head looks like, I’ll continue to grow out and donate as long as I can!

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

I wanted to support a worthy cause. There are so many children who have lost their hair do to various illnesses and their parents do not have the financial means to buy wigs for their children.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

Honestly I decided to grow it a little longer than normal and and as time went buy I decided to let it grow out. I never had the opportunity when I was in Corporate America. As it was growing out I decided to let it grow so it flows down to the middle of my back. Then I will donate the 12 to 14 inches need and have hair left to still have a pony tail.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

Looked cool and knew I'd get people asking me about it.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

Annoys my wife (in a nice way...) plus I grew up in 70s' and the whole street fair hippie vibe intrigued me as a kid.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

I wanted to get the word out about this great charity event.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

I just like having long hair, it makes me feel like me.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

To show support for the cause and have a cool measuring tool to track my progress.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

My stepmother dealt with hair loss after having a kidney transplant which she eventually lost her life too. Plus I'm a father of 3 so seeing children struggle with something hits a soft spot with me so I think its great to do something to help them out.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

I’ve been a longhair for ages and wanted to support the good cause !

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

I wanted to try something different going into high school. ANGUS Young from Acdc gave me the inspiration.

Image

Why did you decide to buy the t-shirt?

It was because I sympathized with The LONGHAIRS activities and because there were no such cool shirts in Japan for hair donation.

Is there a story or a person for why you're growing your hair out?

With no work for covid-19, I wondered what I could do for someone.

Going For A New World Record

In 2019 our rallying cry was: 2,000 Haircuts for Kids Who Can’t Grow Hair.

In breaking the world record we received 2,834 hair donations. Considering three years earlier we had zero t-shirt sales, or people growing their hair, or even a concept for an event…it’s clear now that a wave of commitment is building for 2024.

As such, today we announce our target, our tagline, and our rallying cry for The Great Cut 2024:

10,000 Haircuts for Kids Who Can’t Grow Hair

We don’t know what the world record is going to be in 2024…but we know how many people we’re going to break it with.

The target is staggering. And yet we know with the support and commitment that’s already growing, fueled by the energy from each new person growing their hair out, emboldened by the overwhelming success of The Great Cut 2019, together…we can make history.

Will you join us?

  1. I live with an autoimmune disease and decided to start growing out my hair for a donation in March 2019 when it became unsafe for me to continue my volunteer work to help support children living with disabilities. Given the circumstances, I could think of no better way to give of myself than to donate my hair.
Yesterday, as I was shopping for new hair ties and a headwrap, I somehow stumbled across this page and was inspired to deepen my commitment and participate in 2024. So, after extensive research on Children with Hairloss, I chose to order their “My Next Haircut” t-shirt along with plenty of the CWHL Hair Ties by The Longhairs. I’ve also signed up for the updates and ordered my “Grow by Night” t-shirt yesterday. Now, my only question is how to inspire my friends, family, and colleagues to join me in this incredible event. Thank you for helping me find another way to make my hair donation even more meaningful! – – – ps: have you considered creating some kind of promotional kit folks like me can use to help raise awareness and get others to make the commitment?

    1. LUKE! Thanks for sharing man, powerful stuff. We are so PUMPED to have you commit to 2024. It’s going to be powerful, rewarding and we are gonna help hundreds of kids. We’ll have some type of promo package as we get a little closer to the event. We’ll out it out there on the email list you are subscribed to.

  2. Ordered our shirts today to track progress for 2024. We were thrilled to participate as a family in 2019’s Great Cut. Hard to believe it’s been two years, but we are ready to go at it again! What an amazing group and a wonderful effort to help children!

  3. i’m reserved with the goal collecting 10 000 manes for you need more than 1 000 000 us$ to pay the transformation if them into 1 000 wigs for kids
if you prefer your hair stay on your head, you can also make a buckets donation
and i trust El Rubio and El Moreno will not be worried if someones prefer send us$ 28 to Children With Hair Loss non profit than buying a great cut tee shirt

  4. I have been growing my hair since the 2019 Great Cut, and it’s getting long — currently the middle of my back. The last time I gave 19 inches of hair, and I will give considerably more in 2024. The last time around, I was able to get 10 friends to also donate; let’s see what I can do for Great Cut 2024 as I help get us to the 10,000 goal.
