The Frizzbuster

Need a solution for your curls, frizz or damaged hair? A keratin treatment for men is a certified frizzbuster, but also offers incredible results for curly, damaged or unruly hair.

In this post I’m going to cover why a keratin treatment is one of the best long-term solutions for guys struggling with curly, frizzy hair, offering ultimate control and saving you from a daily, time-consuming hair routine.

Why Does Hair Get Frizzy?

Understanding frizzy hair is the first step to finding the best solution.

In short, frizzy hair is caused from the amount of open space between your hair cuticles, the microscopic fish-like scales on the outer surface of the hair shaft, which behave in similar fashion to the pores on your skin.

The proper term for the space between your cuticles is called “porosity,” and depending on the conditions of the air and the natural porosity of your hair, your cuticles can open wider and shut tighter.

Some guys naturally have lower porosity and experience minimal or no frizz, whilst other guys, particularly with curly hair, may experience unpleasant poof and frightfully frizzy conditions.

Understanding your hair type and where you are on the porosity chart is key when choosing a solution for your hair. In the next section I’ll explain how a keratin treatment can help guys who have curly hair and identify on the higher end of the porosity scale.

How Does a Keratin Treatment Fight Frizz?

A keratin treatment, made from same protein as your hair, is an in-salon procedure designed to close your cuticles and reduce porosity for an extended period.

Much like hair ties, these hair treatments are not well-marketed to men, usually labelled as a “beauty product.” In fact, both men and women can benefit from a keratin treatment, even guys with straight hair and minimal frizz. El Rubio swears by them, especially when he's dealing with tangled and damaged hair.

I have a video on my YouTube channel demonstrating how a keratin treatment worked on my frizzy curls and what to expect when getting a treatment. You can also find more useful information about keratin treatments on my blog.

What Makes it a Keratin Treatment 'For Men?'

A keratin treatment for men is nothing different than a treatment for women. Your hair professional will do your treatment exactly the same as she would for anyone's hair.

Because people often think of keratin treatments for women, I used the male terminology in this post to emphasize they are just as effective for men's hair. And since most articles on the subject are geared towards women, my aim is to offer some solid keratin education from a guy's point of view. I hope the info is helpful!

Are Keratin Treatments Permanent?

No, keratin treatments are not permanent and do not straighten your hair. It’s a common misconception for people to think keratin treatments work the same as a chemical straighten because they both give the hair a significantly more relaxed look.

The main difference between these two treatments is:

a) Chemical straightening psychically breaks the structural bonds of your hair. This permanently disables your curl pattern and leaves your hair vulnerable to breakage. This treatment is also irreversible so you need to think carefully before deciding on something like this.

b) A Keratin treatment lightly coats the structural bonds of your hair, giving them a smooth, relaxed look. Instead of losing your curl altogether, it becomes looser and frizz-free, making it far more manageable every day. This treatment typically can last anywhere from two-four months, depending on how you care for it.

When I got my first keratin treatment, I was given 3 different options. I was able to have the treatment on for either 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 1 hour.

Each time length was going to give me a different result in terms of how relaxed I wanted my curls to look. The longer I had the treatment on, the more relaxed and frizz-free my hair would turn out.

I ended up choosing the 45 minute option as I still wanted a curly appearance but really wanted a frizz-free result. You’ll see at the end of my video above, I revealed my new relaxed curl pattern two days after the treatment and was pretty stoked with my results.

Since my first treatment I’ve been getting one every three months to keep my maintenance low and feeling awesome. #wouldreccommend

How Much Does A Keratin Treatment Cost?

Keratin treatments can cost anywhere from $200 - $350 in the USA depending on how much hair you have. Some may consider this to be rather expensive, however, it depends on how you value time. If you spend a lot of time trying to tame your curls and reduce frizz on a daily basis, you may find a keratin treatment more beneficial in the long run.

For me personally, getting a keratin treatment allowed me to stop fluffing around so much with my hair in the morning and focus more on my business and the content I want to make.

Plus it made the act of just doing my hair more enjoyable, which seems to be the biggest problem when dealing with frizz.

Where Can A Guy Get A Keratin Treatment?

If you’re in San Diego, The Longhairs always recommend House of Imago. If you’re elsewhere, most professional salons offer keratin treatments. Ask your trusted hair pro—here are some tips on how to confidently navigate your visit to the salon.

Shut Down Frizz With A Keratin Treatment For Men

At the end of the day, picking the right solution to deal with your frizzy hair is entirely up to you. I feel it’s also got a lot to do with how your hair makes you feel.

Personally, when I have a frizzy hair day, my confidence sinks. That’s why I deem a keratin treatment worthwhile, busting frizz and helping me manage my hair FAR easier.

  1. As a guy, I wasn’t sure if a keratin treatment was for me, but I’m so glad I tried it. It’s made such a difference in the appearance and manageability of my hair. Plus, it’s saved me so much time in the morning getting ready. I highly recommend this treatment to other guys looking to improve their hair. do check out this salon https://thegrovesalons.com/services/men/

  2. My hair is only about 1 1/2 inches long bit has wave in it. Is it to short for Keritin treatment? Or is there a better way to straighten. I do use a small flatiron.

    1. Yo Doug! Let it ride, man. We would not recommend anything like a keratin treatment until your hair is much longer, about 10 – 16 inches we’d say.

  3. I do lots of guys keratin treatment… I’ve tried many products and for the lady with sensitive scalp, the product it’s not suppose to touch the scalp… well most people likes the Brazilian Blowout Smoothing, no down time and rinses out right after the treatment so clients can see the results they waited 2 hours doing it. About your hair; I did see less frizz on your hair but the curl size was not that much different… girls wanted the beach waves …. much love and happy 2021

  4. I have done the keratin and it looks beautiful but the after effects were very painful for me. I have very sensitive skin and I had keratin done a few times. My scalp suffered alot. I had severe itching that lasted for months, every time i had the treatment done. I also lost tons of volume. I am glad it worked for you. But like everything else, it is not for everyone. I miss the sleek hair but not enough to go through that.

  5. I had a curly hair with goof volume and i went for kertine treatment. But aftet getting treatment my become stright and fizz free, but it become flat without volume..please suggest to get back volume..yes i am male

    1. Absolutely yes. My mom and my sister and hundreds of other women customers use it and love it!

  6. i have gone to the Bhave’s site; at the faq, i’ have gotten the information of their ” miraculous” keratin called fully bio active keratin: a wool based mix of oxidized keratin, solubilised keratin and peptase issued hydrolyzed keratin
i suspect it is in fact a bio sourced plastic matter from keratin obtained by a treatment with bleach water and sodium hydroxyde, then neutralized by glucose and acid ( two german high school students did produce a similar plastic with chitin a few years ago)
i am scarred for i have not found any safety assessment datasheet about this ingredient on the ewg site, and also for the long term effect on the hair…
on the skin, a product is eliminated within a week, but we want, as longhairs, keep our hair for a few years…

  7. Back in August, I tried a DIY treatment: Uncurly, the treatment has done wonders, Now in December, the treatment is on its last leg, ready for a reapplication. I tried to make the treatment last as long as possible, with once a week full wash and condition, with Redkin products.

  8. Are these safe now? In the past keratin treatments contained formaldehyde and carried carcinogen warnings. Some searching shows they still do and that ones without it aren’t as effective. Is the risk worth the result for those that do them often?

    1. Good question HTAE. I had not been aware of these warnings. Worth looking into further.

    2. Author

Hey HTAE, You’re right, formaldehyde used to be a key ingredient in keratin treatments which did prove to be harmful to humans. It’s now illegal to have formaldehyde in keratin treatment products (at least in Australia anyway). The Keratin Treatment I got in the video on this post is by an Australian brand called bhave and they are completely formaldehyde free.

I covered the question “do keratin treatments cause cancer” in this blog article I wrote on my website. : https://thomasinaction.com/bhave-keratin-treatment

Essentially, before getting a keratin treatment you need 2 things:
      1. A good relationship with your hairdresser whom you trust.
      2. Double check the ingredients of the product they stock to ensure it doesn’t contain formaldehyde.

      Hope this helps.

    3. I am a hair stylist and wife of a guy w long curly hair the Keratin treatments are under more regulations and most if not all DO not contain formaldehyde (I am allergic to formaldehyde) and currently use 2 types of the keratin treatments in the salon in conjunction with this post I would like to add one thing with any texture treatment it’s important to add a good hydration mask treatment as well. I would definitely do a hydration mask once a month most salons and barber shops offer them. I currently use the Simply Smooth Keratin treatments or the CHI enviro Keratin treatment I can personally vouch for these products.

      1. Well formaldehyde is one of the 10 on the list of ingredients to preserve products ( food as well in different amounts ). Well I got to the bottom of the formaldehyde history… back in the 60’s the government’s of the world and companies alike were losing their products and cargos because products and food were spoiling therefore we couldn’t feed the world … most places didn’t (some still don’t have ) large refrigerated places to keep food and merchandise fresh. I am certain formaldehyde is everywhere.

I love natural stuff but unfortunately they have no shelf life… other thing that makes me sad is to Look up the skies and see the chemicals trails…

I do lots of keratin in NYC … I wish they had a formalin free product that worked… but they really don’t… I am trying another one next month…

  9. i am interested to get the ingredient list of keratin treatments for as i am a long haired man ,i also publish a critical blog about hair cosmetics ingredients

this list is written on the bottles ( ask your hairdresser to take a picture of the ingredients aka INCI list on the bottle)
as i ask to a female youtuber making a “customer rewiew “of those treatments, i never get any answer…
    let it grow, bros !!!

    1. Yes Chamane, I will look at ingredients list next time. And we are letting it grow, bro!

  10. in France, an organic haircare movement dispute against bresilian blowout aka keratin treatment, for much testimonies says that the first is miraculous, the second straight only the hair, and at the third, they get much breakage and very split ends
at that adress, an advice from a french rapunzel, who did first used colouring and much bresilian blowout: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfYP3edxiHU ( french language)
for the ” dry” hair, it is often deshydrated, and the american too greasy conditioner is often guilty; i propose you a test: add to your dose of shampoo ( no soap based !!!) one coffee spoon of yoghourt; if your hair feels better, there is a deshydratation and no oil or grease an solve the problem; you need glycerin ( 1% in a spray) or aloe vera gel
